These are my DIY stroke-rehab 2021 videos: showing various forms of activity.

Open-brain surgery, AVM brain haemorrhage (congenital), in 1995. Gait, balance, sensory loss, aphasia; unable to walk, talk, read, write, remember. Now, One-Handedly, off-and-on Covid-lockdowns: Walk Study at universities; practice-the-moves of Elevate Brace, Walk with/without legbrace, How-to tutorials, 60th Birthday, .. and more. Practice, perseverance, persistence, patience - one day at a time.

Video 2021-01: WALK no-brace-Beach-St-Heliers-Miranda

I still deal with footdrop, clonus, and sensory deprivation on my right side. The leg brace has given me much confidence over the years, but there are other less bulky approaches.

In this video, my laced-up high-ankleboot, gives relatively good support; the laces permit just a little plantar flexion.

Hence need to try it out on solid and sloped surface (decked walkway) , as well as unstable surface (beach).

Video 2021-02: Walk with/out brace; St. Heliers, Coromandel, Devonport (+AC75 TeamNZ)

Another example, where the surface conditions are slightly different. And an opportunity to test my balance in being able to adequately video the Team NZ Americas Cup boat on the water in Auckland.

We happened to be up close and personal at Devonport, and catch the boat in full flight. One-handed; zooming in on a moving target and keeping the camera steady.

Cameras are right -handed, I can only use my left hand, and I have balance challenges. I did pretty well.

Video 2021-03: WALK with/without brace Westhaven; Clevedon [ELEVATE brace]; Eastern Beach

Another example of walking with and without leg brace assistance, where the surface conditions are slightly different.

  • More confident walking without leg-brace and less hesitation, at Westhaven.

  • Slower walking using an Elevate drop foot brace, at Clevedon Oysters

  • Careful but improved walking on sand with AFO leg brace, at Eastern Beach

Video 2021-04: Walk++: Latin Fiesta in Auckland

WALK++; this time the Latin Festival in central Auckland 2021.

Food, culture, dance, language and did I say dance?

Samba, zumba and everything in between from all over South America, it is so diverse at the Latin Fiesta.

Getting my invite to DANCE-participate, and also video the samba bands… I don’t hesitate.

Video 2021-05: Walk No-Brace Rotorua Kuirau Park-OneHand photos

Passing through Rotorua - this occasion sees us at Kuirau Park, a geothermal spot in the central city but not far from Lake Rotorua.

Its the perfect place to try walking without my leg brace; my boots have good support for my ankle, and I’ve cleverly fashioned the laces to prevent footdrop.

A new experience to be free of, and not have the bulk of the footbrace, but still I have to be vigilant.

Video 2021-06: Mt. Ruapehu; Whakapapa & SkyWaka OneHand photos

Mt. Ruapehu, in NZ’s National Park: where I used to ski in the winter.

Its completely different in summer - a pristine high altitude environment and blazing sunshine. And volcanic rocks. Lots of them.

And a new gondola, which you have to be quite nimble to be able to get on…

I’m up for the challenge.

Video 2021-07: WALK Elevate Brace; grass, gravel, lavender field walk

The Elevate Brace - a small form factor aid that assists foot drop. It is designed to be less obtrusive and more flexible than the full lower limb leg-brace.

Provence (France) is synonymous with rolling fields of Lavender, and we have some of that in NZ. Here, the terrain is undulating, and full of unseen obstacles especially if you only have 20% sensation on your right hand side.

l think I can manage it…

Video 2021-08: WALK AUT Ankle Study using Interface EEG+EMG, to improve rehabilitation outcomes for stroke patients

AUT Research. EEG monitoring paired with FES stimulation, so as to synchronise physical activity with FES intervention.

The intent to promote bridging of the trigger neurons to the receptor neurons.
